A First-Timer's Guide to Shinjuku Ni-chome

Everything you need to know before exploring Japan's most iconic LGBTQ+ neighborhood.

2025-05-01

Shinjuku Ni-chome (新宿2丁目) is Tokyo's – and arguably Japan's – most famous LGBTQ+ district. Nestled in the heart of Shinjuku, it's home to over 200 bars and clubs packed into just a few city blocks.

Getting there

Take the Marunouchi or Shinjuku Line to Shinjuku-sanchome Station (C8 / E9), exit C8. The district is a 2-minute walk.

Tips for first-timers

  • Most bars are small (5–15 seats). Arrive early or be prepared to wait outside.
  • Many venues are women-only or lesbian-friendly – look for the "L" signage.
  • Bring cash. Many small bars are cash-only.
  • English is limited but smiles go a long way!
